What laser grading actually does
Laser grading uses a rotating laser as a fixed height reference and a machine-mounted receiver that guides the cutting edge automatically. Instead of the operator eyeballing the grade and re-checking it by hand, the machine holds the target height or slope across the whole area — every pass, all the way to the edges.
The payoff is a surface that’s genuinely true, not approximately true. And that accuracy flows straight through to how the finished job performs:
- Proper drainage — the surface sits at the exact fall required, so water runs off instead of pooling.
- Less wasted material — accurate cut-and-fill means you’re not over-ordering gravel, sand or soil to cover uneven ground.
- Fewer passes, faster finish — the machine holds grade continuously, so there’s less reworking and manual checking.
- A base that lasts — even, well-compacted ground reduces the settling and cracking that lead to expensive repairs down the track.
Where We Use Laser Grading
Laser grading suits any job where a true, even surface is the whole point. The work we’re asked for most often includes:
- Horse arenas, ménages and dressage arenas — a dead-level, free-draining base is essential for a safe, consistent riding surface, and arena construction is one of our specialties.
- Sports grounds and ovals — laser levelling produces the even playing surface these need and makes ongoing maintenance far easier. Please refer to the video above.
- Driveways and laneways — correct grade and fall keep a surface stable and self-draining. Pair it with our gravel driveway construction for a complete result.
- Shed pads, car parks and hardstands — flat, compacted subgrades ready for concrete or gravel.
- Site preparation and building pads — the critical first step on any build. See our site cuts and site preparation services.
- Paddocks, landscaping and top dressing — smoothing and levelling large open areas efficiently
- It also ties in neatly with the rest of our earthworks, from farm dam construction through to drainage and bulk soil supply.
